By the narrowest of margins Barcelona missed out on the Spanish title this season. Leading the table with three fixtures remaining, the Catalans travelled to play their nearest rivals Bilbao who sat just a point behind them. The Basque side scored a second-half winner to leapfrog Barça and, with both sides winning their two remaining games, hold on to that single point advantage to the end of the season. Then playing as an inside forward, Barcelona had signed him from Deportivo La Coruña in 1954 and he had spent his first year at the club mostly out on loan. The 1955-56 season was his breakthrough year and he quickly impressed with the skill, vision and tenacity that would illuminate many a Barcelona team over the next seven years.
