With Pele, Beckenbauer and Chinaglia spending their NASL careers predominantly on the American east coast, when the Los Angeles Aztecs went looking to import some star quality to the opposite side of the country there was just one player they could turn to: George Best. The showbusiness feel of the Aztecs made it a perfect home for the Irishman who, although past his best when he joined them in 1976, could still thrill a crowd with his tricks and skills. Best would spend three successful seasons in Los Angeles and played some of his best football there since his peak years back in Manchester. The 15 goals he scored in 24 games during his debut season earned him a nomination in the NASL All-Star Team. In his second season, the Aztecs reached the play-off semi-finals, and Best's contribution to the club's run was recognized when he was named the League's best midfielder for 1977.
