A difficult time in the modern history of the Dutch game with the national team following up failure to qualify for the 1982 World Cup with similar disappointment in the Euro ‘84 qualifiers - albeit under the most unlikely of circumstances.

Leading their group and with a massive goal difference advantage, it meant that group rivals Spain went into their final game at home to Malta needing to win by an 11 goal margin to advance at the expense of the Dutch. The final score was a scarcely credible 12-1 win for the Spanish.

A positive from the Kees Rijvers era was his willingness to bring through young talent and he was responsible for introducing future stars like Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten and Ronald Koeman to the international arena during this period.
