The 1980s was a decade on the fringes for a Panama national team which played few fixtures and had opted out of entry to the CONCACAF Championship for many years. However the qualifiers for the 1985 edition doubled as a World Cup qualifying group and the nation was keen to see a concerted effort to reach Mexico '86.

Drawn to play home and away ties against Honduras, Panama?s lack of international experience was telling and the team fell to defeats in both legs despite the best efforts of their star striker Victor Rene Mendieta Ocampo.

Ocampo was little known outside his own country, but just a matter of a few years later Panama would see the emergence of the Dely Valdes twins; both strikers who would go on to enjoy great careers in European club football.
