The 1984-85 season was one of change for Benfica with new manager Tomislav Ivic departing early in the campaign and being replaced by Pal Csernai. New signings Jorge Silva, Wando, and Adelino Nunes arrived to replace the departing Fernando Chalana and Glenn Stromberg. These changes affected the Lisbon giants' momentum and meant they were unable to win a third successive Primeira Divisao title. Some respite came with a 19th Taca de Portugal success and a 3-1 victory over FC Porto in the Final. The two-goal hero of that match was the Danish striker Michael Manniche who was emerging as a potent goal threat for the club, scoring 28 in all competitions. He was ably supported by the long-serving stalwarts Nene and Carlos Manuel who both contributed double-figure goal totals.
