The 1980s was a difficult decade in the history of NAC Breda with the club suffering serious financial problems. By the start of the 1990s the future looked much brighter however and the club was managing regular, if ultimately unsuccessful, promotion pushes towards an Eredivisie return.

The return of the up and coming former youth prospect Pierre van Hooijdonk to the club where he had started his career brought an impact up front and the youngster’s fine partnership with John Lammers inspired NAC to a fourth placed Eerste Divisie finish during the 1991-92 campaign.

This earned the club a play-off place but sadly not promotion as NAC lost out to Go Ahead Eagles. Fortunately for the club that promotion would finally arrive 12 months later and kickstart an exciting era in the club’s fortunes.
