This emergent Stuttgart side's 1977-78 Bundesliga campaign started poorly but picked up markedly as the season progressed. After half a dozen games the club sat second from bottom in the table with just a single win, but form improved dramatically and die Roten ended the season in a highly respectable fourth place, nine points behind champions Koln. At the heart of the team was a powerful defensive set up with West German international Karlheinz Forster alongside the Yugoslav star Dragan Holcer. Another player soon to make his mark for the national team was the skilful midfielder Hansi Muller who scored 14 times over the course of the campaign. Hermann Ohlicher was Stuttgart's other most dependable source for goals while the impressive Dieter Hoeness brought yet another attacking dimension to Stuttgart's play.
