Chasing a return to Ligue 1 for the first time since 1950, Red Star's form this season never suggested that a promotion push was a genuine possibility. With the veteran ex-international striker René Bliard retiring in the summer of 1963, much of the attacking responsibility lay on the shoulders of his old partner Daniel Rodighiéro who did not disappoint.Although Jean Avellaneda's side ended their Ligue 2 campaign in an ordinary eleventh place, Rodighiéro was their star performer and earned himself a move at the end of the season to Ligue 1 with Rennes. Red Star were not far behind and would secure their own elevation to the top-flight the very next season.

When the Pole Aleksander Mandziara was put in charge of Young Boys Berne in 1984, he became the latest in the long line of coaches tasked with restoring the club to the competitive levels of the late 1950s when it had won four successive Swiss titles.Things started to come together for him during the 1985-86 season, his second in charge. Placed a modest fifth at the halfway point, the catalyst for a major upturn in form was the arrival of Swedish international midfielder Robert Prytz. Forming a fine relationship in midfield with Georges Bregy, Prytz also brought the best out of Danish striker Lars Lunde and his goals saw Young Boys close in on long-time leaders Neuchâtel Xamax. At the climax of the season and now trailing by just a point, Young Boys travelled to play their title rivals and stunned them with a 4-1 win. The Swiss title was secured for the first time in 26 years and remains the most recent the club has won to date.

Karlsruher's 25th anniversary celebrations coincided with an unfortunate relegation from the Bundesliga, meaning the club began the 1977-78 campaign back in the 2.Bundesliga Sud division just two seasons after last winning it. Hopes were high that exile from the Bundesliga would be brief. In that 1974-75 season it had been the 25 goals of Bernd Hoffmann that had fired the club to promotion and this time round the goals came from striker Emanuel Günther in what would be his only campaign with KSC. Günther's season total of 27 goals topped the division scoring charts but wasn't quite enough to push Karlsruher higher than a seventh placed finish.
