Today (September 14th) in 1963, George made his debut for Manchester United. Many players will tell you what struck them about their debut is the noise and so it was for George. Even decades on he could still hear it. The way the tunnel was designed with a slight incline made it difficult to see the crowd. George remembered that the noise as the team emerged was overwhelming and he had envisaged nothing like it subsequently making him totally unprepared .The hairs on the back of his neck bristled, as the decibel level rose as one section of Old Trafford’s oratorio competed to out-do another. One word, chopped into syllables, became comprehensible to him above the roar: U-nite-d. ‘I felt like a gladiator coming into the arena,’ he said. The effect it had on him was ever-lasting. ‘Even later in my career, playing at Liverpool or Benfica, or in front of 130,000 at Real Madrid, nothing quite compared with that first time’ said Best. ‘It will be there until I die.’
