A decade of radical change as the Argentinian game transformed from skilful individualism and outdated tactics to a pragmatic and aggressive European-style game based around solid defence and counter attack. Performances at the 1962 World Cup were poor and as a consequence two years later a new footballing identity emerged under coach José Minella. Argentina victory in the 1964 Nations Cup included a 3-0 win over World champions Brazil that was a masterclass in smart tactics and calculated aggression.

Juan Carlos Lorenzo brought a strong squad to England for the 1966 World Cup that included greats like Onega, Rattin, Perfumo, Marzolini, Mas and Pastoriza. Argentina's campaign showed promise before being ultimately undermined by a relentlessly provocative approach. Elimination came in an infamous Quarter-Final tie at Wembley against the tournament hosts, a game remembered most for the controversial sending off of the Argentinian captain Antonio Rattin.
