As Italy opened its doors to foreign imports for the first time in a generation, Roma benefited more than most fellow Serie A clubs by winning the race for the influential Brazilian midfield general, Falcao. He was at the heart of a powerful midfield alongside Agostino DiBartolomei and Carlo Ancelotti that elevated Roma and put them into a two-horse title race with Juventus.
Juve ultimately edged out Roma into second place, but only after some controversy late in the season when the pair met in Turin. A header late in the game by Roma's sweeper Maurizio Turone was controversially disallowed for offside. Had it stood Roma would have won the game and the two points would have given them a potentially decisive lead in the title race.
Roberto Pruzzo was once again Serie A's top marksman and Roma had the consolation of retaining the Coppa Italia, with Torino once again their victims in the Final.
