The best days of Berchem Sports had come in the early 1950s when the club had come close to becoming national champions. By the 1960s Berchem had settled into a different role as one of those clubs typically too strong for the second division but never quite strong enough for the top flight. This pattern continued into the 1970s with roughly half of the decade spent at either level. Highlights from these years included an appearance in the Belgian Cup semi-final of 1971 and the discovery of Ludo Coeck, a future Belgian footballing great who was signed expensively by Anderlecht after a single season at Berchem. There was a legendary Belgian football figure in charge of the club for much of the decade too. Rik Coppens was a prolific international striker during the 1950s and 60s, and after he finished his playing career with the club stayed on and had several spells as manager.
