The 1980s was yet another wasted decade for a Spanish national team that continued to fail to live up to potential. There was plenty of out-and-out disappointment: the failure to make any impression on their home World Cup in 1982 with José Santamaria's uninspiring Basque-orientated squad flopping badly.

The weak group stage exit from Euro 1988 was little better. And then there were the moments of promise like reaching the Final of the European Championships in 1984 under Miguel Muñoz, against the odds, only to fall to hosts France after a disastrous individual error by keeper Luis Arconada.

Then two years later in Mexico an exciting Real Madrid and Butragueño influenced side hammered a highly regarded Denmark 5-1, only for their bubble to be quickly burst with elimination in the next round on penalties by Belgium.
