FC Porto recovered in 1956 after a slow period in the immediate post-war era to take a first title since 1940. Another would follow in 1959, however the previous season was a frustrating one as the club finished level with Sporting Clube on 43 points, but with an inferior goal difference that consigned them to the runners-up spot.

There was better news in the Taça de Portugal however with FC Porto winning the competition for just the second time in their history. Otto Bumbel’s side overcame great rivals Benfica in the Final thanks to a goal early in the second-half by Hernani. Benfica and Porto kicked off their final matches of the season level on points and goal difference, but while Porto comfortably won their fixture against Sporting Covilha, Benfica crashed to a 1-0 defeat at Boavista to hand their great rivals the trophy. This was a Porto side that was developing into one of Portugal's greatest ever club sides.

There was a core of established players like Brazilians central defender Celso, right back João Pinto, striker Fernando Gomes and talented winger Paulo Futre, and this group was joined by successful new signings like Brazilian forward Juary, Algerian winger Rabah Madjer and the veteran Polish keeper Józef Mlynarczyk.
