The Red Devils shocked the continent by winning Africa's Cup of Nations in 1972 in just their second participation in the competition. The Congolese national team had made great progress since playing together as an independent nation for the first time in 1960 but had not been considered likely winners when the 1972 competition got underway in Cameroon. Congo beat the hosts in the semi-finals then narrowly defeated a strong Mali team 3-2 in the Final, all their goals coming within six second-half minutes. One of them was scored by Congo's star man and only foreign based player, François M'Pelé. The other goals came from the powerful striker Jean-Michel M'Bono who finished as the tournament's second top scorer overall with four.
