Following the years of underachievement during the 1960s, the following decade saw Scotland at last project itself onto the world stage. Losing out in qualification for Mexico '70 to a powerful West Germany team was no disgrace and this would be the last time the Scots would experience disappointment at that stage for the next quarter of a century. Scotland's participation at both the 1974 and 1978 World Cups brought different frustrations from different circumstances. West Germany '74 was mostly about bad luck. Draws with Yugoslavia and Brazil and victory over Zaire were still not enough to see Scotland qualify for the next round. The narrow 2-0 win over Zaire cost the Scots on goal difference with Yugoslavia and Brazil defeating the African side by much bigger margins. The 1978 tournament was a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. There were the lows of the disastrous defeat to Peru and uninspired draw with Iran offset by the thrilling 3-2 win over the Netherlands. The bottom line was the same: Scotland could not deliver on its considerable promise and returned home earlier than they had hoped.
