Over the course of the 1980s the Cameroonian national team slowly built a momentum that would reach its climax during a remarkable World Cup campaign in Italy 1990. A first World Cup qualification had arrived in 1982 and the Indomitable Lions performed above expectations by drawing all three group games and being unlucky not to progress to the knock-out rounds.

Two years later Cameroon overcame Nigeria to become champions of Africa for the first time and as the decade neared its end a powerful team was coming together under the experienced leadership of the Russian, Valery Nepomnyashchy. Veterans like N'Kono, Antoine Bell, Kunde and Milla brought experience and know-how to a line-up also featuring exciting younger players like Oman and Kana-Biyik.
