Cast to the fringes of the international game during the 1960s, France went through multiple coaches and dozens of players in an attempt to restore their competitiveness. Out of desperation the FFF even turned to a foreign coach for the first and only time in their history. Stefan Kovacs had been a European Cup winner with Ajax but he made little tangible difference either as the national team missed out on qualification for the 1974 World Cup and the 1976 European Championships under his watch. The tide started to turn with the arrival of Michel Hidalgo and the emergence of a new generation of genuinely gifted talent. In defence Bossis and Trésor were mobile and powerful stoppers; Fernandez, Tigana and Giresse brought a range of midfield talents that complemented perfectly the gifted playmaker Platini while Rocheteau up front boasted sharp finishing to go with his clever movement. France participated at the 1978 World Cup although it would be the following decade when that gifted group of players hit its peak and the world saw French football at its best.
