Raith Rovers began the 1995-96 season in the Premier League after a unique League and Coca Cola Cup double in 1994-95, and would manage a respectable campaign with a mid-table sixth placed finish. Attention from elsewhere after the League Cup win of 94/95 was inevitable, with Stephen McAnespie leaving for a club-record fee and talismanic manager Jimmy Nicholl departing for Millwall mid-season.

Nicholl was still present however when Raith began their maiden, and to date only, European adventure. Victories over teams from the Faroe Islands and Iceland put Raith into the UEFA Cup 2nd Round, with the draw landing them a dream tie with Bayern Munich. After a 0-2 loss in the first leg, Raith famously led 1-0 at half-time in the Olympic Stadium courtesy of a Danny Lennon free-kick before eventually succumbing to a credible 4-1 aggregate defeat. The half-time scoreboard remains an iconic image in Kirkcaldy.
