The 1970-71 season was a memorable one in the history of Stade Rennes as the club enjoyed Coupe de France success, their second victory in the tournament arriving six years after the first. With League performances unremarkable, this was an era when Rennes were very much a cup team and had reached the semi-final stage several times in the previous few seasons.En route to the 1971 success Jean Prouf's side defeated eventual Ligue 1 winners Marseille and in the Final overcame Lyon, the winner coming from an Andre Guy penalty just 6 months after he had joined Les Rennais from their final opponents.
Many a fan will fondly remember Ousmane Soumah's goal against Halmstads: The forward scored a dramatic diving header in extra time that saw Sporting Club de Bastia crown their superb Intertoto Cup run with the championship and a return to the UEFA Cup in that same 1997 - 98 season for yet another continental adventure.
