The early 1990s was a turbulent era for Real Betis with the club beset by financial issues and stuck playing in the Spanish second tier. Things started to improve by the 1993-94 season when, under Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, Betis finished as runners-up a point behind Español to earn promotion back to La Liga after a three-year absence.

This was a team which featured a returning hero in the veteran Rafael Gordillo playing in midfield alongside the talented youngster Juan José Cañas. The team also had illustrious homegrown players such as Merino, Ureña, Cuéllar, and Márquez. To round off a successful season, Betis also reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey after eliminating Barcelona during their run.
